Let's not forget CONNECT request over HTTP as a transport layer, as well.

It'd be nice if the higher-level protocols, such as HTTP and FTP, used a generalized interface to the transport layer. This way, HTTPS could be implemented as "HTTP over a TLS transport", FTPS would be implemented similarly. The transport layers themselves could also ride upon other transport layers, so we could have such things as "HTTP over TLS over SOCKS over TCP over IP over SMTP" (for tunneling internet connections over an SMTP proxy ;)
