Tue 07 Aug 2007 01:32:14 AM UTC, original submission:

It would be pretty cool to have a means for specifying a mapping from URNs to URLs. For instance, one could desire that urn:ietf:rfc:2616 be translated into a URL such as http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc2616.txt - or that urn:isbn:0-395-36341-1 be translated into a URL describing the appropriate book on the user's favorite bookstore website.

For the simplest cases, such as those above, it is conceivable that the NSS (Namespace Specific String) be directly copied into a URI template; for instance, the above RFC example might be handled by something similar to:

urntemplate["ietf:rfc"] = "http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc%s.txt"

For more complex situations, we'd want programmable translations.
