Sounds like it is worth fixing the phrasing of the error message. Which specific message is misleading?

At least in find 4.2.25, if find attempts to backtrack (apparently by doing a chdir("..")) and that backtrack fails, find essentially aborts. The error message given, though, does not clearly indicated that this is happening--it looks like the simple permission error (warning) that is given when find cannot enter a directory. Many users would probably find this misleading.
