Thanks for taking care about this. I have informed RMS and the OP (although I think she is subscribed to your ML) about your decision.

The Italian GNU translators mailing list reached a broad consensus on the following position: "business" can be translated as "commercio" and derivatives (like "commerciale") or "affari" and derivatives, or "attivita' economica" (which is a bit cumbersome).

It ultimately depends on context and also on avoiding "artificial" Italian.

The cited example can remain as it is: we are not going to change it as it is the most natural translation. However, we will find the proper way to translate "business" and related terms on a case-by-case basis in future.

Only some notices from the DeMauro dictionary of the Italian language. (Solo qualche nota dal dizionario DeMauro della lingua italiana).

Affare: operazione commerciale o finanziaria.

Saluti.

P.s.: I beg pardon if I don't write in English, but I would be able to write only boner! (Chiedo scusa se non scrivo in inglese, ma riuscirei a scrivere solo strafalcioni!).

The following was sent by RMS to <web-translators@gnu.org>, I think an Italian reader wrote to him. Please DTRT and let me know what the outcome is.

The question is the right way to translate "business" into Italian.

From: "Dora Scilipoti" <dorascilipoti@alice.it>
On the other hand, the meaning of the word "business" is rather broad, as it can be translated into so many different ways depending on contest. Now, what do you mean by "business" in this case? We have two possible words in Italian for it:

Commercio: means "trade", exchange of goods for money or other goods. The Spanish equivalent would be "comercio".

Affari: any activity that gives you the possibility to earn money. The Spanish equivalent would be "negocios".

From: rms
I think "Affari" is the correct translation of English "business".

From: "Dora Scilipoti" <dorascilipoti@alice.it>
Please note that similar sentences said by you have been translated into Italian as "commercio".
In http://www.gnu.org/gnu/thegnuproject.html we read:

"The free software philosophy rejects a specific widespread business practice, but it is not against business.
When businesses respect the users' freedom, we wish them success".

The italian translation in http://www.gnu.org/gnu/thegnuproject.it.html is:

"La filosofia del software libero rigetta una diffusa pratica commerciale in particolare, ma non è contro il commercio.
Quando un'impresa rispetta la libertà dell'utente, c'è da augurarle ogni successo."
