The cause was an old libming-0.4.0-beta from 2 Feb 2007 installed, symlinked from libming.so.0 instead of any of the correct libraries.

The new libraries 0.4.0 are installed but if just the .so.0 symlink is removed, a reinstallation of ming recreates the symlink pointing to the old library so the breakage persists.

Solution is to remove the -beta library and its symlink libming.so.0, rebuild ming again and install it.

The messages you get (NEW Date...) are from a DEBUG build of the actioncompiler. This makes me think you have old libraries hanging around. Please check which library is 'makeswf' linked against.
Also, Ming has a 'make check' rule, can you successfully run it ?

The makeswf output for testcases/actionscript.all/Date.as does nothing forever, and -v makes it spout:

22:39:22: ERROR: *** no tag loader for type 733 (movie)

hundreds of times per second

out.swf is eight bytes long (attached) so presumed a bug in ming-cvs. ming --version says:
$Id: makeswf.c,v 1.31 2006/12/12 23:36:10 strk Exp $
(pretty weird for a program version number :)

makeswf output generating out.swf says:

Compiling `out.swf.frame0.pp'... NEW Date '(' expr_list ')'
NEW Date '(' expr_list ')'
NEW Date '(' expr_list ')'
NEW Number '(' expr_list ')'
done.
Adding Date.as to frame 0... done.
Saving output to out.swf... done.

producing out.swf.frame0.pp, 24520 bytes long and out.swf, 8 bytes long.
