I believe that the thing which made it work was switching from the 'nv' driver to 'nvidia' (i.e. the manufacturer-provided driver)...that's the point at which it started drawing properly anyway. Interesting how I only saw graphics problems with GS... :-/

I have got the same problem when I reduce the colours to 16 bit (same system, nvidia graphics). Could you tell me how you solved it? -- Ingolf

Not actually a GNUstep bug - turned out to be an issue with the X driver on the system. Sorry.

System is Ubuntu 6.10 (gcc 4.1.2, Xorg 7.1.1., on i386

When an application is launched, the windows (including the app icon and the menu) appear but are plain white, as in this screenshot of Terminal:

This is accompanied by messages such as:
