Looks like a dupe of bug 10074.

Work around, in the mean time:

screen -d -m irssi whatever

It works, the main problem being that, once irssi stops, screen stops too.

I reported this bug in Debian <http://bugs.debian.org/481411> before noticing it is already here.

The same bug occurs on FreeBSD so it is not Linux-specific.

Too bad the bug report seems ignored.

I would like to start a service (SMS to IRC messages) by starting irssi within screen and then sending it messages remotely using -X eval, but this fails if the screen has never been attached. Once you attach and detach the screen it starts working.

This is extremely frustrating since it means I have to start the service by hand every time I reboot the machine.

You can test it by the following commands:

$ echo "ls" > foo
$ screen -d -m
$ screen -X eval "bufferfile foo" "readbuf" "paste ."
$ screen -r

[nothing has happened]
C-a d [detach the screen]

$ screen -X eval "bufferfile foo" "readbuf" "paste ."
$ screen -r

[the output of ls has appeared]

I'm using screen version 4.00.02 under Ubuntu, and have had the same problem previously with Debian. If there is any way around this bug (e.g. another way to remotely send messages to screen) I would gladly hear about it.
