Hmm, I did a lousy job describing symptoms:

Symptoms: Grub 0.97 grub-install gives errors when trying to read back data from the device.

During boot, a successfully installed grub 0.97 elsewhere on the disk spits out error 17 when trying to access such a fs, which i understand to mean it can't access/understand the filesystem.

The grub command line in the emulator or in the boot environment will not tab complete directories or files on such an fs.

The grub 2 command line emulator will not tab complete directories or files on such an fs.

grub cannot make sense of this filesystem, although it works fine.

I have only tried to reproduce locally, so it could be a local tools problem, or heck a bug in e2fsprogs, but I suspect grub does not handle the significant change of the disk structure brought about by the inode size change.

Tested with grub 1.95 and 0.97.

dumpe2fs attached.
