Tue 16 Jan 2007 06:08:52 AM UTC, original submission:

Software:
- bash 3.00.16(1)-release (i586-suse-linux)
- tar (GNU tar) 1.15.1

Filesystem (simplified example, upper-case means directory, lower-case means file):
./A/a
./B/b
./C/c
./C/C1/c1
./C/C2/c2
./C/C3/c3

Task: backup ./A completely, ./C partially (excluding ./C/C1 ./C/C3), and don't backup B.

Problem: bash's extended patterns doesn't work for me in both include-from and exclude-from files.

Example (hereinafter "shopt -s extglob" command is omited to conciseness, string '$ ' means bash prompt):

Case 1:

$ cat i
A
C
$ cat x
B
C/!(C2)
$ tar -cvf b.tar -T i -X x
A/
A/a
C/
C/c
C/C1/
C/C1/c1
C/C2/
C/C2/c2
C/C3/
C/C3/c3

This is wrong since C/C1/c1 C/C3/c3 are fall into backup.

Case 2:

$ cat i
A
C/!(C1|C3)
$ cat x
B
C/!(C2)
$ tar -cvf b.tar -T i -X x
A/
A/a
tar: C/!(C1|C3): Cannot stat: No such file or directory
tar: exit due to previous errors

Specifying any extended pattern in include-from file leads to tar error.

Igor
