OK, I investigated a bit.
Problem with libpng is png.h being in /usr/include/libpng12/png.h and not /usr/include/libpng/png.h as I expected. I didn't test on Mandriva but on Fedora core 6 it worked.
Problem with readline was solved by linking on readline and ncurses, escpecially in the configure.ac file. I'm not sure how relevant this (ncurses) is for LW6 but the fact is that it solves the problem.
Latest 0.0.2beta releases includes these fixes.
I hope it will work this time!
Have a nice day,
Christian.

I ran
[root@localhost lib]# ln -s libexpat.so.0.5.0 libexpat.so.1
and it now ouputs (so yes, it was fixed by symlink, but)
[------@localhost ~]$ /usr/bin/liquidwar6
/usr/bin/liquidwar6: symbol lookup error: /lib/libreadline.so.5: undefined symbol: BC
Now, /lib/libreadline.so.5 is a symlink to /lib/libreadline.so.5.1 which is the library file.
And thats the end of that. Any suggestions on how to proceed?

As I've said before, it looks as if the packages are correctly installed, so I don't know why it wont work either.

Awesome. (what virtualization tool do you use?)

Ok, well no rush. Although, I've been dieing to try it :D

For the RPM, you're perfectly right, the problem of not being able libs such as expat comes from the fact that the system I've built it on (a Debian system) does not have the libraries in the same places than your system (Mandriva). After all, there must be some reason for all thoses "mdv" flavored packages.
You can always try to symlink the actual existing libexpat .so (for instance /usr/lib/libexpat.so.1.0.0) to /usr/lib/libexpat.so.1 , just to check that it solves the problem. It's dirty and temporary, but it can help finding out what's the real problem. I successfully used that kind of hack to run various programs.
But the real problem that bothers me (the RPM not working is an "expected" problem, the only real fix is: package it specifically for MDV, in other words, put it in Cooker) is the problem with ./configure not detecting libs.
The good news is that I now have a virtualized vanilla Mandriva Free 2007 system installed here, so I'm ready for testing.
The bad news is that I have a 4 days old baby at home, so I have very few time to test this out. Still, experience shows that babies do grow up 8-)

I've moved house an I'm back (see my email I sent you ufoot (regarding IM's to sort out this problem)). I also didn't have time to login last time,. but this is my account :P
I have a brand new install on Mandriva on a new computer. Same problem with both the source compiling (libpng and libreadline problem), and the rpm problem (expat).
[------@localhost ~]$ rpm -qa | grep libpng
libpng3-static-devel-1.2.12-2.2mdv2007.0
libpng3-devel-1.2.12-2.2mdv2007.0
libpng3-1.2.12-2.2mdv2007.0
[------@localhost ~]$ rpm -qa | grep libreadline
libreadline5-devel-5.1-1mdk
libreadline5-5.1-1mdk
[------@localhost liquidwar6-0.0.1beta]$ liquidwar6
liquidwar6: error while loading shared libraries: libexpat.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
[------@localhost liquidwar6-0.0.1beta]$ /usr/bin/liquidwar6
/usr/bin/liquidwar6: error while loading shared libraries: libexpat.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Mmm, OK, I'll try and set up a Mandriva box here, to check out what's wrong with ./configure
To start the game when the RPM is installed, you must start the console and run "liquidwar6" or "/usr/bin/liquidwar6".
There are 2 reasons for that: 1) LW6 RPM does not come yet with all the fancy scripts/config files that configure a nice menu entry for Gnome/KDE/... and 2) as it's in beta, it's interesting to see what the console says.
Have a nice day,
Christian.

Both installed. The configure script must be wrong.

The RPM installed fine with no error. But I can't figure out the command to start it (liquidwar6 from shell?)
I'm running Mandriva Linux 2007. The two codes you gave me
dpkg-query --list libreadline* | grep ii
dpkg-query --list libpng* | grep ii
Don't work for me, but I'll find something that does.

Additionnally, I'm not an automake/autoconf wizard, but sometimes these tools keep test results in cache. Try removing ./config.cache or ./autom4te.cache/ if they exist, run "make distclean", or, even simpler, re-extract the source tarball in a fresh directory before running ./configure
Hope this helps,
Christian.

Hi,
I've got a few questions/remarks to understand and fix your problem:
1) What OS are your running? Using RPMs, DEBs?
2) FYI, I'm running Debian GNU/Linux "etch" (testing) here:
Here are the packaged I've installed:
----8<-----------------------------------------
ufoot@watt:~/home$ dpkg-query --list libpng* | grep ii
ii libpng12-0 1.2.15~beta5-1 PNG library - runtime
ii libpng12-dev 1.2.15~beta5-1 PNG library - development
ufoot@watt:~/home$ dpkg-query --list libreadline* | grep ii
ii libreadline5 5.2-1 GNU readline and history libraries, run-time
ii libreadline5-dev 5.2-1 GNU readline and history libraries, developm
----8<-----------------------------------------
3) libreadline & libpng are definitely needed to run LW6, there's no way you can do without them.
4) depending on your setup, using the precompiled RPMs/DEBs might help. See http://www.ufoot.org/liquidwar/v6/download
Hope this helps.
Thanks for your feedback, and have a nice day,
Christian.

I've installed everything, every package and everything. But it still comes back as needing them (both readline, and libpng (when I comment out the readline stuff in configure)) installed :( Which means I can't compile it :(
