The problem as reported in this bug is fixed.
There are other problems with this movie, but maybe we
should file a new bug report for them.
Please test and proceed as you will.

I found the problem:

ActionCallFunction([string:../:play]) called

Rather then using ActionCallMethod - 'play' method of ".." object,
the SWF contains an ActionCallFunction.
It seems we need to support that.. but I wonder which compiler output that insane thing !

I added the game author in the CC list, maybe he can tell
us what does the "click on button" trigger, or is supposed
to trigger. Can you Dennis ?

0.7.2 is unsupported, please try a CVS snapshot (gnashdev.org/dev_snapshots) or fetching from the HEAD branch (better)

When I try to play the SWF file at http://media.ebaumsworld.com/sonic.swf on Ubuntu linux (x86) with Gnash 0.7.2 clicking on the start button causes the start button to animate but I do not get taken to the character select screen. Clicking on start again causes the same animation but the game does not continue correctly.

I have observed the same problem with a port of Gnash to RISC OS, running on ARM.
