We've moved to GRUB 2 as a development platform. Please can you check if this bug still applies there, and if it does, reopen it?

Thanks

I compiled grub-0.97 from sources on my x86_64-pc-linux-gnu system. My tool chain is gcc-4.1.1/binutils-2.17. The GRUB thus built works to some extent. I can create a boot floppy, as described in the info pages, and use it to load and boot my linux kernel manually. However, if I try to install grub on my hard disk, I get weird errors:

>--------------------------------------------------------------

sarkovy:~# /sbin/grub-install /dev/hda

GNU GRUB version 0.97 (1433218132K lower / 1433218132K upper memory)

lists possible command completions. Anywhere else TAB lists the possible
completions of a device/filename. ]
grub> root (hd0,0)

grub> setup --stage2=/boot/grub/stage2 --prefix=/boot/grub (hd0)

If I boot from a floppy disk and uset the 'setup' command, the results are very similar, only the memory values, disk/partition numbers and error numbers, which are obviously bogus, are different.
