Eric is right. Backslash is the quoting character for xargs. From the first paragraph of the manual page:

xargs reads items from the standard input, delimited by blanks which can be protected with double or single quotes or a backslash) or newlines, and executes the command (default is /bin/echo) one or more times with any initial-arguments followed by items read from standard input.

This does not seem like a findutils bug, but a misunderstanding on your part on how to properly quote arguments so that the \ is preserved and passed into xargs.

P.S. How up-to-date is the gnuwin32 version? You may want to consider using the cygwin version instead, which is probably more current. Also, the cygwin version lets you use either \ or / as a path separator, but it is much easier using / since it doesn't get confused with a character quotation device.

Using the gnuwin32 version, I would expect it to know about the backslash.

Giving in files such as c:\pad\temp\a c:\pad\temp\b c:\pad\temp\c

It turns them into c:padtempa c:padtempb c:padtempc

This renders xargs fairly useless.
