You need to type "make html" or "make pdf" to get any output.

There was a typo in the package list - it should be docbook2x

In the configure stderr output there is:

configure: WARNING: You need to install xsltproc and docbook style sheets before HTML output can be generated
configure: WARNING: You need to install the docbook2X package before Texi output can be generated
configure: WARNING: No suitable fop nor pdfxmltex, PDF format files can't be generated

Once packages docbook2x and xsltproc are installed, the warnings go away. (pdfxmltex is included in tex, which is brought in by docbook-utils)

I don't understand what effect this has. "make" doesn't seem to generate anything useful under doc/
Is there something I'm missing?

I think there is a reasonable chance that this problem is the same as one I have experienced on several BSD systems. I receive the error when running configure, but if I try to use docbook, it works.

I created task #6214 to request that this incorrect error message be adjusted.

check your config.log file, should contain some info about
missing something.
Start reading at:
checking for docbook styles path.

Also note that the current CVS (remember to run ./autogen.sh)
contains an additional package in the list of suggested for install (texinfo) as I had a similar problem and found out 'makeinfo' was missing.

I can't ./configure with --enable-docbook:

ERROR: No DocBook2X tools installed! docbook, docbook-xml, docbook2Xm docbook-utils, docbook-xsl (using apt-get or yum).

even though I installed all the mentioned packages via apt-get.
