I have tried to find occurrences of a certain string in the translations of a po file with msggrep but did not succeed because I cannot find the correct invocation for that trivial task.

Thanks for the suggestion. I've added such examples. You find them

About the terms "msgid" and "msgstr", I don't agree. These terms
are necessary to describe the behaviour of the tools precisely.
For instance, most tools have input and output, therefore we may
be talking about "the original string in the input file",
"the original string in the output file", "the translated string
in the input file", "the translated string in the output file".
Terms like "the original string" are 3-way ambiguous. Furthermore,
when a message has an empty msgstr, we consider it untranslated.
So "when the translated string is empty, it is untranslated", or
what? It's just too confusing.
