To add some information to this bug report:
After some Suse updates my 10.1 this messages from the compiler are gone. So there is hope :-)

After upgrading to Suse 10.1, I now get hundreds of compiler warnings of the form:
externs.m:31: warning: ‘_OBJC_INSTANCE_0’ defined but not used
externs.m:32: warning: ‘_OBJC_INSTANCE_1’ defined but not used
externs.m:33: warning: ‘_OBJC_INSTANCE_2’ defined but not used
...
while compiling almost every file in GNUstep. The record seems to be AGSHtml.m with 283 warnings! Apparently harmless, since everything works as expected. Gcc 4.0 did not do this.

Suse 10.1 (clean install) with gcc 4.1.0
