Please seek the bug tracker for ".. opens in new tab" bugs, I'm pretty sure there's some. Otherwise file another one.
It's a well-known issue. See task #5919 for a clean solution.

The original bug was fixed by the version detection, but the site now opens tabs interminably, presumably because the plugin can't open a new url in itself.

This site now pauses for about a minute and then goes to a nice page saying "This site requires Macromedia Flash Player 7 or higher" with a button to take you to Get macromedia flash player.
This is their standard page for when their plugin detection fails, in this case because Gnash is aborting.
Console output says:
ACTIONSCRIPT ERROR: Script aborted due to exceeded limit: Loop iterations count exceeded limit of 65536

The SWF is here:
http://www.fxnetworks.com/flash_detection.swf
With current gnash it doesn't crash, but makes the CPU jump up to 100%..
$version is defined now, btw.

Sorry, I misread the original submission, there's no segfault there, seems just a normal run. Given the name of the file (flashdetect.swf) I'd assume that what the file does is simply detectin player version, and maybe it doesn't like gnash.
Actually, looking at the code it seems the culprit is the $version
global variable that gnash does not support...

the 0.7.2 branch of gnash seems not to segfault on this anymore, still doesn't work, but no segfault.

I had this same problem with other sites. I thought Firefox had suddenly turned evil on me. Trying to start it with -safe-mode etc, somewhat helping..
But i just figured out that doesnt disable the loading of plugins, when i saw that Gnash had installed a plugin (i meant to just try it, i have the normal Flash plugin for the browser already).
Anyway, i blaimed Firefox and wrote this bug report:
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=354824
But removing the plugin also removed the issues. I'm glad i can just browse again.
