The attached patch makes PSPP able to read all of the portable files I could find on the web, including the EBCDIC ones. (I should say, the "EBCDIC" ones, because they turned out to actually be in ASCII but claim to be in EBCDIC. I assume that they were recoded by some kind of translation program.)

Also, I found out the format of a documents record while doing testing, so I added documents writing to the portable file writer.

A number of EBCDIC portable files can be found by typing "spss ebcdic port file" into Google. It would be a good idea to test with some of these.
