Between hardware improvements, SIMD instructions usage, and other code improvements, gnubg should be typically 6-8 times faster now than it was at the time of this bug report.

Moreover, 2ply evaluations by the current version are more accurate than 4ply ones from back then.

Using multithreading for play would be nice, but it is difficult for a relatively limited gain. I don't see it happening in the foreseeable future.

Rolls were averaging 3-7 minutes at ply 4.

ROlls at 5 minutes for 4ply, ovr 30 for 5; cube never cam eback >3. If you use threding elewhere, why not in the ply search? Hyperthreading and multiCPU are common now. No capture possible. At least add a ply position count and rundown counter, or an estimated time to complete, and a way to back ths off to a lower ply orforce move completion at a timeout value or mark (like the acept button in mid move)
