It's -r2 or -r3 (the second bit on) that enables sound.
We currently have it disabled by default as the sound handler code is not stabilized yet.
If any doc says a different thing please open a bug item for that.

I have version 0.7.1 on Debian amd64. Both the experimental debian package and a version I compiled from source have the problem that sound is disabled by default; I have to pass the argument -r 1 in order for sound to play. The documentation says that -r 1 should already be the default. Either the documentation or implementation seems to be in error here.

For the plug-in, sound is disabled and I'm not sure how one would pass the required command line to turn it on.

(I tested with http://www.homestarrunner.com/intro.swf, but I don't think that the specific movie makes a difference.)

I was able to enable sound in the standalone player by changing 'false' to 'true' on line 247 of gnash.cpp... didn't take the time to see why the plugin had no sound.
