Hmm. Well, maybe I'll drop this idea then. In tests with an older SPSS version, it definitely dropped everything past 80 characters. Maybe they've fixed this--although the manual I have for SPSS 13 still documents the limit on BEGIN DATA...END DATA.

I did some brief experiments using SPSS v12.

I did not find any evidence of an 80 character limit either within a BEGIN DATA block or elsewhere.

SPSS documents that lines with BEGIN DATA...END DATA are limited to 80 characters and actually truncates them to enforce it. Some versions also enforce an 80-character lines in syntax lines. (We should find out whether this is true of the most recent versions.) We should enforce similar limits in compatible syntax mode.
