I'm pretty ignorant about .la files.
But I know they are a pain when it comes to dependencies (they seem to extract deps from other .la installed system-wide) and yes, I'm also not happy with both versioning and the libtool warnings about relinking (which was fixed before the switch back to our own ltdl.c)

No, that was the output for dumpconfig in opengl-gtk (oops!)

It turns out that libxi, like libxmu, is only required by the GTK and KDE libraries. In the other directories the dumpconfig line does not report any use of -lXi

The problem I was getting with missing -lXi was caused by me removing libxi-dev package then reconfiguring and building in the same directories as before. If I remove all contents of the build dirs first and do the same, the non-GTK/KDE build all succeed, and the GTK/KDE builds fail gracefully due to lack of their dev packages - as they should.

I would guess the original submitter had an incomplete installation of GTK-dev or KDE-dev, i.e. missing the dev packages they depend on. Unfortunately they are Anonymous and do not describe their OS/environment so we cannot follow this up so I'm closing this item.

As an aside: in my failure scenario above, with libXi removed and configure rerun, the only mention of -lXi is in .la files in the build directory. If I simply remove these and say "make" again the build runs to completion, recreating the la files too.
Should "configure" maybe purge .la files from the build dir?
Is this related to the overzealous config-caching problem I saw elsewhere?

Alright, so next step is finding out how was GTK2_LIBS generated.
I bet it was pkg-config, can you confirm ?

pkg-config --libs gtk+-2.0

If the output contains -lXi but libXi is not installed then
it would be a problem with the system, not with Gnash, right ?

Hi Sandro.
GTK2_LIBS is -lgtk-x11-2.0 -lgdk-x11-2.0 -latk-1.0 -lgdk_pixbuf-2.0 -lm -lpangocairo-1.0 -lfontconfig -lXext -lXrender -lXinerama -lXi -lXrandr -lXcursor -lXfixes -lpango-1.0 -lcairo -lX11 -lgobject-2.0 -lgmodule-2.0 -ldl -lglib-2.0

With libxi-dev present and only libxmu-dev missing (and the things that depend on it), every build succeeds except opengl-gtk and opengl-kde (which need dev libraries that need libxmu-dev and which correctly detect their absence)

So the only problem here is libxi either being unnecessarily included in the link or not being checked for during configure.

Please try running 'make dumpconfig | grep Xi' to see which LIBS variable is including it.

Debian certainly installs libxmu-dev if you install libgtkglext1-dev or kdelibs4-dev,
and installs libxi-dev if you install gtk2.0-dev

without libxi-dev or libxmu-dev installed the build succeeds for:
agg-fltk

configure correctly fails for lack of the GTK and KDE packages for:
opengl-{gtk,kde}

while the following fail linking libgnashserver, saying
"/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lXi"
agg-{fb,gtk,sdl}, cairo-{gtk,sdl}, opengl-sdl

Certainly agg-fb shouldn't be requiring X libraries, so at least in part this is due to over-zealous inclusion of unnecessary libraries by configure.

I think pkg-config will solve this for you...

make failed until because i did not have libxi or libxmu devel packages installed. these should be checked for in configure. thank you for your consideration.
