Reported as fixed.

That probably fixed it, thanks :)
(I used a diff from rev. 22459 to rev. 23188 for GWorkspace/WorkspaceApplication.m)

I fixed the GWorkspace bug in SVN, so it now reports correctly when it has launched a service provider.

I can't reproduce that behavior ... I guess it is a system specific/config issue on your systems (mine is Debian unstable Intel 64bit in the default flattened directory layout built with debug=yes).

If I can't reproduce it, there's not much i can do to help apart from make a few suggestions ... If it's failing to launch automatically then presumably either the executables aren't being found or they are failing to run (perhaps dynamic library loading issues).

I think the best bet for diagnosing the problem would be to run an app under gdb and set a breakpoint in the -_launchApplication:arguments: method of NSWorkspace and step through to see exactly what it's doing (ie what it uses as the path and arguments of the executable. If the breakpoint is never reached, you could set one in the GSContactApplication() function and step through from there.

This functionality works fine for me with current SVN code but ...

I do notice some problems when GWorkspace is installed (which takes over the role of launching things). In this case the first attempt to use a service fails with a 'failed to contact service provider' alert panel, but subsequent attempts to use the service are fine. This appears to be due to a GWorkspace bug, returning NO rather than YES when it successfully launches the service provider, so that the application requesting the service thinks that the service provider has not been launched.

Is this the behavior you are referring to?

1. Install some service (e.g. http://www.roard.com/latexservice/) and do make_services
2. Start some app (e.g. Ink) and try out the service. Unless the service is started manually, you'll get the error message like "cannot start provider for <service>".

It works fine when applications provide services (e.g. GNUMail). Strange thing that noone reported this yet..

FreeBSD 6.1, gcc 3.4.4.
Happens with GNUstep SVN (base, gui, back) and gnustep-back-0.10.3, gnustep-base-1.12.0_2, gnustep-gui-0.10.3. It worked before 0.10.3/1.12 iirc.
