...oops. `wt-trees' are weight-balanced trees, not AVL trees. Foo.

Turns out that this was due to a typo in the code to fetch IMAP message items, whereby it would ask for the sorted index of the message, which requires sorting the message's folder, which requires fetching the IMAP message items... In any case, the new code to sort folders by AVL trees instead of vector mappings seems to have improved the situation.

I know about this problem, and started a fix a while back, but never finished it.

The problem is that the folder is re-sorted every time anything is changed, even if those changes are trivial. Furthermore, when several messages are added to the folder at the same time, it is re-sorted for each message.

If you'd like to fix this, I'll be happy to send you the work I already did.

Sorting sufficiently large mailboxes in IMAIL causes thrashing for me, sometimes fails entirely, and makes subsequent message navigation thrash as well. I haven't investigated this thoroughly enough yet to identify the source of the thrashing, but it's bad enough that it occupied enough resources to cause a mail system failure on a VPS, the result of which was the obliteration of someone's mail.
