Thanks for reporting. This bug has been fixed in CVS. It was fixed (or worked around) by the patch in bug #4531, transformed to the attached one in CVS.

the following happens:
$ echo > foo
$ grep -P "\xa" foo
Segmentation fault

I'm using:
$ grep --version
grep (GNU grep) 2.5.1
$ uname -r
2.6.14
$ cat /etc/slackware-version
Slackware 10.2.0
