An X server crash is a bug in the X server, not one of its clients (Gnash).
Still, we should handle context creation failures (although I thought we did, we apparently don't do a very good job).
That said, this bug is probably a mix of different problems. Let's keep this bug closed and please file any issues you have now (i.e., not in 2006) in a new bug.
Not sure why this bug is marked as fixed, but on the assumption this bug details various bugs in X.org, I'll mark as wontfix.

this bug seems to be related to 16638 and 19001.
i think it should be re-opened, as the x-crashes are provoked by gnash miss-behaving.
the source is, as found out in this bug and the two others, the opengl-renderer. it crashes the x-server if glXCreateContext fails.
this happens, for example, if you manually installed the proprietary nvidia-drivers, updated your system and some files (like libGL.so) got replaced and you then restarted your x-server without fixing those problems first (by reinstalling the drivers).
other opengl-applications fail with the error-message "glXCreateContext failed" and don't harm the rest of the environment in any way. gnash should do so, too, instead of crashing the whole x-server!

Any news on this? I am getting again the X.org crash with the plugin. And yes, I am using the latest plugin version, this is what I see in about:plugins:

Update: I get the Xorg crash not only with the plugin, but also with the standalone gnash player. Seems the crash happen always at the end of elvis.swf.

I am still having this problem with the firefox plugin (but not the standalone player).

Right - I can see that now. It looks as though somehow my configure wasn't being generated properly, although I could be wrong. Anyway, gnash doesn't crash with cairo and I was sufficiently encouraged to try again with openGL, and I haven't managed to make it crash with that either!
Yes, I've been to a number of different flash pages and, working or not, my X server remains running. So whatever you did seems to have worked, fingers crossed - thanks very much!

When configure finishes, you should see this in the summary (amongst other things):
Renderer engine: cairo
Whilst OpenGL still is the default.

I'm afraid so. Same error message. Actually, I can only assume it was using the cairo renderer as there was no actual message during configuration or compilation to tell me so. But all I got with any flash animation was a grey rectangle, so I assume it was using cairo! The plugin was still linked to various GL libraries.

When you use the Cairo renderer (./configure --enable-renderer=cairo), does the crash still occur?
Also note that you now have to use --enable-plugin (and, if needed, --with-plugindir=path) to install the plugin. If you don't, you'll be using an old version of the plugin.

I'm still getting the crash with any flash page I visit. By the way, I'm the one who reported the Xorg bug and the error message is the same.

I believe this is fixed. Please try latest CVS and let me know whether or not the problem is indeed solved.

I'm now experiencing this myself. It seems that we're crashing in the new instance of gnash (which is created by the plugin) in gtk_init()...

The log of gnash can be found on the duplicate bug #16638.
Note that the crash seems to be reproducible with any SWF file (e.g. elvis.swf); sometimes plays fine for 2-3 minutes before the crash.
Note that I have also tried building with --enable-i810-lod-bias (since I have an intel i810), but nothing changes.

I still suspect this is an X.org bug (perhaps in your particular OpenGL driver). Can you provide the SWF files which crash your your case? (I can't find reporter's tetris module.)
Also, backtraces created with a debug Gnash build and a debug OpenGL (probably Mesa) build would be very welcome indeed.

Hi, I have the same problem, I am using X.org 6.8.2, the original found in Slackware 10.2.
I have this problem with any swf files. X.org crashes after a random time playing the file and then try to reload itself crashing again and again, I have to reboot because I can't even switch to the console.
I had this probles from the first time I tried gnash, but never reported here because I though it was a X.org problem.

I have a Tetris module in my google login page (www.google.com/ig) and when gnash try to execute the flash movie it makes X11 6.9 to crash
i'm using X11 6.9 for slackware downloaded from ftp.slackware.com/pub repository, it doesn't has the XGL module compiled and Xorg.log file doesn't gave me details about this crash :( sorry...
good luck
(btw, this flash movie can be found at the link for "add content" in the same google's home page)
