This is already in the development sources, via the "layout" command (which needs documentation).

I'm not familiar with the details of how to use it, but I'll note that:

1. C-a : layout foo
2. C-a d (to detach)
3. reconnect

Brings me back to the same layout I was using.

A common method for handling this is nested screen sessions.

Steps to re-create:
1. Create a screen session
2. Split the window into two (by default, ^A+S), and type two different strings into each window
3. Detach the screen session
4. Attach the screen session. Note that now you only have one window. Your layout has been lost

It would be nice if this layout could be preserved on re-attach.
