This is marked RESOLVED FIXED at Debian,
and appears never to have been a bug with FreeFont or other fonts.

I think the bug is in this particular font ligature. At least I get the same result using with Lambda and dvipdfmx and FreeMono.ttf.

AFAIK this has nothing to do with pango. I guess the stroke is not properly drawn (but I may be wrong, since I wasn't able to find any ligature on this font editing it with FontForge).

This is described first in Debian bug #358526: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=358526

This bug is indeed more widely described in http://bugzilla.gnome.org//show_bug.cgi?id=334758.

Freefont is not the only font set which is hit by the bug. DejaVu is also hit.

The advice of pango authors here is that multi-script fonts are very likely to be hit by this bug which is revealed by the latest pango.
