I just checked in a patch for this fix that corrects the previous problem.

I get WARNINGS for same reason on a 32bit system.
This is running car_smash.swf:

$ backend/gnash server/samples/car_smash.swf
WARNING: void gnash::fill_style::read(gnash::stream, int, gnash::movie_definition_sub) (106): 3 read bad gradient value!

^^^ warning repeated 15 times

The application doesn't quit, but the output is black.

I don't know if it matters about black output, but I just fixed
a bug in ogl.cpp segfaulting when glGetString(GL_EXTENSIONS) in check_extension returns NULL (that is to say it does return NULL on my system - no extensions...)

This patch breaks on a 32 bit system. The original assert() was to trap a gradient between 1 and 8, and this patch does the opposite. It does look like an issue with endianess. We probably dopn't want to be reading a byte sized value into an int if possible. I just checked in a patch to not abort on a bad gradient, which allows all the movies I've tried with this problem to play.

Gnash stop with the message

ERROR: void gnash::fill_style::read(gnash::stream, int, gnash::movie_definition_sub) (102): 4 read bad gradient value

when trying to run any flash movie (including the two movies in the testsuite). The other parts of the testsuite somewhat works for me.
I'm using Yellowdog Linux 4.0 (ppc G4), so this might propably be an endianess issue...
