Close this bug. It was an issue with my system. /dev was whacked to the point that nothing could see inside the directory without core dumping.

I'm unable to reproduce this problem. Are you pasing any options to updatedb?

Perhaps you could set 'ulimit -c unlimited' and run updatedb manually, and tell me where the core file (which would be dumped in / unless you use the --changecwd option) indicates the crash is occurring.
