As Boris says, $(wildcard ...) does indeed work.

As for globs directly in the vpath name, that does not work, and is not documented to work. If you want to expand globs, use $(wildcard ...).

In 3.81beta3, code like:

vpath %.c topLevel/*

apparently looks for a directory named "topLevel/*" rather than expanding the wildcard to the list of subdirectories. You cannot use $(wildcard...) either because vpath doesn't expand variables (as previously reported).
