I can't reproduce this either. If you are having problems with a makefile please ask (with FULL details, including a SMALL example makefile you've tried that doesn't work, plus information on what happened, what you expected to happen, what OS/version you are using, etc.) on the -unavailable- mailing list.

I'm closing this bug.

What makes you think so?

$ cat >makefile
foo = $(warning hello)
vpath %.c $(foo)

$ make
makefile:2: hello

Using 3.81beta3, code like:

vpath %.c $(frob)

apparently looks for a directory named "$(frob)" rather than expanding frob to a list of directories.

VPATH may be the same, haven't checked
