Parallelism has worked fine in a recursive make environment since GNUmake V3.78. You just have to structure you makefiles correctly to take advantage of the parallelism. The reason most make implementations do not support parallelism in a recursive environment is because 'for' loops are used to walk through a list of directories. Get rid of the 'for' loops and parallelism works fine.

That paper presents some very clever hacks to get make to work for a large project without using recursive invocations of make, with some nice benefits, such as parallel make working correctly and a full make running much faster.

It would be great if make could somehow provide some first-class support for this style.
