it works on my NetBSD/ppc system now.
Unfortunately I can't try on sparc for the ffcall reasons you know, but as you describe the problem your fix should be definitive for current netbsd versions.

OK, I removed the static libs version of the netbsd target, so all netbsd systems should build shared, unless you specifically set shared=no (which I doubt works anyway). Please update gnustep-make from CVS and try it out.

currently used netbsd versions, which are 1.6.x and 2.x have shared libraries. Is it possible to make that the default and do a static only build by passing an appropriate flag? If someone has a lesser used system he may then just enable it that way (if static building still works at all...). An entry in a readme or a possible warning in the configure may warn for this?

make/target.make is looking for a TARGET_OS like netbsdelf. If your system is reporting just netbsd, then it will think it's an old old (static only) system. Do those exist anymore? Perhaps we should just remove support for it and default to having shared lib support.

could the configure/make system be confused by the system type ? Although I have a 2.0 userland, I have an experimental kernel (I had this in july too when gnustep used to build)
checking build system type... powerpc-unknown-netbsd3.99.8

I removed the core source subdir as well as moved my old gnustep install away, using
gcc (GCC) 3.3.3 (NetBSD nb3 20040520)
as always I reocnfigure and reinstall make afresh and then attempt to build -base. I configure with no options. The build still fails with a CVS version of the 16th Oct.

I just updated and compiled on NetBSD 2.0/i386 using gcc 3.3.3 and there are no compilation issues. Please update and try again as this issue may already have been addressed. GJC

Tentatively reassigned as a makefiles problem ... certainly doesn't seem to be any reason to think there is a problem with the base library.

After updating to latest CVS (24 Sept) I can't compile gnustep core anymore (I have a working install of july). I reconfigure and install -make; -base fails with:

gmake[2]: *** No rule to make target `Additions/static_obj/subproject.o', needed by `static_obj/libgnustep-base_s.a'. Stop.
