If you run with the -n option, make will print the full command line it would run.

I've been reading already various doc pages for over 1 hour, and I am still unable to answer the most stupid question one can think of: "How can I make make show me the gcc command it invokes ?" The highpoint driver Makefile is out of sync with the eternally changing include file locations, but I can't see which gcc options it uses, not even with -ddd. strace shows it calls gcc, but only includes a part of the command line.

Running linux 2.6.12-1.1447_FC4

# make -ddd KERNELDIR=/usr/src/kernels/2.6.11-1.1369_FC4-i686 2>&1 | grep gcc

or with -j :

# make -j KERNELDIR=/usr/src/kernels/2.6.11-1.1369_FC4-i686 2>&1 | more
cp -f raid.o raid.obj
make -C /usr/src/kernels/2.6.11-1.1369_FC4-i686 SUBDIRS=`pwd` modules
make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/src/kernels/2.6.11-1.1369_FC4-i686'
