How is that unexpected? You asked for the 31'st day of 06 (June), which would be 0701 (July 1).

I have tried both 5.2.1 and 5.3.0 on AIX 5.2 and get the same strange behaivor.

AIX 5.2
date (coreutils) 5.2.1
date (GNU coreutils) 5.3.0

host001:/tmp/# gdate +%Y%m%d
20050831

host001:/tmp/# gdate -d "${YEAR}${MONTH}${DAY} -1 month" +%Y%m%d
20050731

host001:/tmp/# gdate -d "${YEAR}${MONTH}${DAY} -2 month" +%Y%m%d
20050701 ?????? Shouldn´t this be 20050630 ?????

host001:/tmp/# gdate -d "${YEAR}${MONTH}${DAY} -3 month" +%Y%m%d
20050531
