I've made the double-expansion functionality optional. In order to get it you have to define the .SECONDEXPANSION psuedo target before you use it for the first time.

I was able to build the complete gcc 4.0.2 source tree (with gcj etc.) with -j6 with this version and it worked fine.

I'm reopening this bug as I've decided to make the new feature optional: off by default and enabled with a psuedo target.

See more discussion in bug #12260.

Note this will cause a lot of make files to be come invalid. Most of the make files which will now be come invalid are make files for java to native with inner classes.

I don't understand why this is changed. It does not make sense really.

Maybe 3.81 should be renamed to 4.0 so that people know it breaks stuff.

Also you will no longer be able to build GCC with the newer make.
Didn't anyone think about testing GCC builds with the new make?

Thanks,

Please check the NEWS file for information whenever you upgrade to a new version of GNU make. This is discussed there (and in the manual of course).

The same Makefile is invoked with GNU Make 3.81beta3 and then
with GNU make 3.80.

Has the $$-escape intentionally been omitted?

% cat Makefile

all: do$$ar
@echo done

do$$ar:
touch $@
% ./make
make: *** No rule to make target `dor', needed by `all'. Stop.
% make
touch do$ar
done
