We've moved to GRUB 2 as a development platform. Please can you check if this bug still applies there, and if it does, reopen it?

Thanks

I am experiencing the same problem on an Intel board with he fedora grub-0.97-3, probably the same Henrik was having his problems with.

dmidecode says the board ist an Intel STL2 with the bios "STL20.86B.0027.P01.0207171927".

The serial redirection of the bios is crap as the bios does indeed screenscrapping and even redraws blank screens several times per second.

When the serial console is enabled in grub, the bootloader hangs for ages. Sometimes after a several minutes waiting period the grub menu is finally shown.

When the serial console support in grub is disabled, the menu is shown instantly, as expected.

I'd be happy if there's anything I can help to debug this.
Stephens solution does not work unfortunately, as there's no way to disable console redirection after post.

I can further report that the problem goes away when the BIOS is configured to use a serial console BUT is told "No C.R. [Console Redirect] after POST". This is on an IBM eSeries 336.

I am experiencing something similar to this problem with an IBM eServer 326 (Opteron; I believe IBM designs their motherboards in house, but I could easily be wrong). Perhaps by being patient as a rock, I've noticed that GRUB actually does work - but it takes 14 minutes after the BIOS init for GRUB to get to the "GRUB Loading stage2..." message.

This bug can be closed. We no longer experience this issue. I do not know if it was fixed in a GRUB update or a BIOS update, but it can no longer be repeated.

I see. If you dig into your problem and give me some hints
why or where GRUB freezes, I would try to fix it.
Unfortunately, I myself have no BIOS which has such a feature.

Thanks,
Okuji

Because the serial redirection of these boards is crap, only useful for getting access to the BIOS in emergencies. Having native serial is highly preferable. The BIOS redirection does some kind of screen scraping to detect screen updates and often misses stuff.

The BIOS is somehow supposed to detect when the application uses the serial.

Should perhaps note that the serial support of LILO seems to work just fine even with BIOS console redirection enabled, and so does DOS. To my knowledge it is only GRUB who crashes..

Note: The serverity is of this bug is only minor. But until it is fixed it might be good to know that there is such issues and is why I registered the bug report.

As GRUB modifies the status of a serial controller when
initializing it, I think anything wrong could happen.

BTW, I'm wondering why you want to enable GRUB's own
serial support, if your BIOS supports serial console
transparently.

Thanks,
Okuji

On certain boxes the serial command freezes grub. This is seen primarily on Intel motherboards with serial redirection of the BIOS screen enabled.

Might be related to a prior report on the grub-bug mailinglist from June
http://mail.gnu.org/pipermail/bug-grub/2002-June/007583.html

Hints on how to proceed in diagnosing what the error may be would be preciated.
