We've moved to GRUB 2 as a development platform. Unfortunately, GRUB 2 doesn't support this feature yet. If you want to help on that, please contact <grub-devel@gnu.org>.

In the meantime, this bug doesn't apply. I'm closing it.

I also encountered this problem with grub 0.96 and 0.97. The work-around suggested seems to work for me, not sure why.

grub.conf with the following setup does not update /boot/grub/default with line 5 commented out:

1 default save
2 title PowerSafe
3 root (hd0,0)
4 safedefault NUM
5 # cat /boot/grub/default
6 halt
7 ...

after enabeling line 5, /boot/grub/default gets updated accordingly.

Suspect: disk cache gets not flashed, if safedefault command is immedately followed by halt.

This scenario is not as useless as it might look like, see http://sourceforge.net/projects/nvram-wakeup
