\E$B is a valid switch to the japanese JIS multibyte charset. The lost characters are invalid sequences. Not a bug in screen.

Attached is a is a file which consist of an escape character following by a dollar sign and capital B. When you "cat x3" (x3 being the file name) inside a screen started using "screen -t test -T xterm -S test" this causes problems where characters start being missed. Here's an illustration of the effect: (not missing e from the hostname.. missing 'b' from username, missing 'u' from Thu, etc.. This seems to affect end of boundary characters in some way. /usr/bin/reset seems to fix the problem. I have tried this on both a Redhat and Gentoo based system as well as a BSD system (on which screen is running). It is important to have "xterm" in the screen command.

Originally some spam messages which appeared to be foreign language characters caused the screen to become unusable because of missing characters. I narrowed this down to a problem only occurring in a screen session under linux (via remote access through PuTTY SSH client for windows and ssh shell on Apple Powerbook.

Apologies if this bug is not within screen.
