both gv-3.6.1 and CVS gv is able to detect the right xaw3d library
on /usr/X11R6/lib

So i close this bug.

There are two problems with the gv-3.6.0 release:

(1) The tar file unbundles into gv instead of gv-3.6.0. This is in
violation of GNU standards, and breaks automated scripts such as
the one that I use to launch simultaneous build attempts in up to
100 compilation environments on twenty flavors of Unix.

(2) After repackaging to fix (1), I got universal failure on all but
GNU/Linux on IA-32 because the Xaw3d support is not present, at
least not in locations that the configure script finds it. For
example, modern GNU/Linux distributions have it in
/usr/X11R6/lib/, but that location is not found by configure in
several recent packages that I've built.

If you are going to rely on Xaw3d, how about autoconfiguring it in a
subdirectory of gv-x.y.z, so that the horrid Imakefile/xmkmf nightmare
does not have to be dealt with. gv should then build smoothly
everywhere.
