Trying to compile both 1.0.4.4 and 1.0.4.R3 on an AMD 64 box running Fedora 2 (gcc 3.3.3, ld 2.15.90.0.3), produces this:

/usr/bin/ld: skipping incompatible /usr/X11R6/lib/libXext.so when searching for -lXext
/usr/bin/ld: skipping incompatible /usr/X11R6/lib/libXext.a when searching for -lXext
/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lXext

Note that the library libXext is present, but cannot be used by the linker.
