This is really a difficult thing to do. Gnubg uses an artificial neural network to evaluate all possible resulting boards. Afterwards, it chooses the move after which you have the biggest probability of winning (this is of course a simplified explanation). So -- the ANN really does not know what exact feature is on this board that makes it so much better than that board. You might get some hints by looking at the various numbers gnubg is able to show you (ranging from pip counts and temperature maps [that is my favourite] to neural net inputs in the Evaluate dialog).

Thanks for this excellent and somewhat (for a novice) complex piece of sofware! So far I use gnubg mainly to increase my bg skills. I use the hints or the tutor mode to evaluate by decisions and learn. Sometimes, or actually quite often, I don't really understand why a particular move is better than another. It would be great if gnubg could present some information on what aspects of a move that makes it good or bad. This would be a great help for us novices!

Best regards,
Charlemagne
