The changes are not a reflection on the usefulness of the feature, but more the reality that it doesn't fall within the confines of the project, even if there were someone in libcdio to do it.

However, using what is currently in the library, I believe this can be done completely outside as a user application much as uniject or samba-vfs are.

(Well, almost. There will probably be bugs discovered in libcdio as a result of such an understaking, but that's different matter.)

For myself, those projects that I really want to get done I will take a more active role. Were I to rely on feature requests, libcdio would not have gotten written. (Nor would there have been bash and make debuggers, etc.)

A comment I often hear when I suggest something along these lines is: "Gee, I'm not a programmer, and/or I don't know/care all that much about [fill in the blank]. I sympathize. Because before undertaking libcdio, I too felt exactly this way.

Finally, there are many ways to take a more active role. One way is to write the program. In this case I think any reasonably competent programmer could do it if they had the desire and willingness to spend time.

But let's say all of those several people that think this is a good idea truly aren't programmers and will never become programmers. Okay, then maybe the collective you could hire a programmer to write it.

Finally, one can wishfully hope that Google or some benevolent organization will get it done on your behalf. But that's not a good bet either. Last year there were no serious college-student programmers interested in working on libcdio.

If wishes were pennies, I'd be a millionaire.

Why was this RFE marked as Wont-Fix, without motivation, when there are several people that thinks this is a good idea?

I have added an "iso-tar" to the TODO list. Ideally something matching the relevant command set of "tar" for listing and extraction would be nice, as that is widely used and probably fairly complete in things that might be desired for listing/extracting.

However, note the following from TODO:

If there is something you really want done ..., it will go a lot faster if you attempt to undertake doing it. Patches are always welcome (and CVS write access is available for those who have demonstrated reasonable ability through contributions.)

As this pertains to iso-tar, my guess that unless someone other than me gets interested, don't count on it soon or before release 0.73. (The last release was 0.70) I've just started adding Joliet support in the CVS sources which will be part of the 0.71 release. Rock Ridge extensions then might come in 0.72. And if that happens, the earliest I'd contemplate an iso-tar would be in release 0.73.

Doing some sort of iso-tar using the existing iso-read and iso-info source as models I don't think all that obscure or tricky to code; so I think this is something ideally suited for a programmer who need not have "guru" skill or know or be interested in low-level CD or ISO9660 reading.

However as for myself, I think my limited time is better spent in shoring up the foundations than adding a feature that given the state of libcdio and libiso9660 will most surely invite more feature requests.

This is a Request For Enhancement. I need a command-line tool that can extract the entire contents of an ISO image, pretty much like "cramfsck -x" can do with cramfs-images. iso-read works, but can only extract one file at a time. Also, it would be nice if RockRidge extensions could be honored, so that owners and permissions are set correctly.
