No response on this bug and I've tried the example in the manual and it works properly for me. I've added a regression test for this case to be sure it continues to work.

There were bugs in previous versions of GNU make where the operation of a prefix character before a define/endef variable reference did not apply correctly, but those have all been sorted out as of GNU make 3.80 as far as I know, and the behavior there is as specified in the manaul.

If you know of behavior which is not as documented in the manual please provide a small, complete test case we can use to see what you're doing. I will leave this bug open for now until I receive more info (or not).

SECTION 5.7 "Defining Canned Command Sequences"

IMHO, the last paragraph is no longer valid/correct for GNU Make 3.80.

# -- DOC-SNIPPET:
frob.out: frob.in
@$(frobnicate)

To my experience, the snippet above works as following.
'@' suppresses only the the first line in make-procedure frobnicate.

This behaviour is at least the case when you use $(call frobnicate) in the rule body.

NOTE: This behaviour change in GNU Make 3.80. GNU Make 3.79 had a similar behaviour as described, but it had another feature that you only enable/disable echo suppression on the first line of the make-procedure.

does not echo any commands. (See section Command Echoing, for a full explanation of `@'.)
