Hello.

We would prefer not to host any flash application on Savannah though. If you use it as an addon, it's okay, but please don't publish it on Savannah because of the reasons named in previous mail.

Furthermore, some of your questions was answered in the GPL FAQ:
"In what cases is the output of a GPL program covered by the GPL too?" - http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-faq.html#WhatCaseIsOutputGPL

"If I use a piece of software that has been obtained under the GNU GPL, am I allowed to modify the original code into a new program, then distribute and sell that new program commercially?" - http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-faq.html#GPLCommercially

Hope that helps :-)

Sebastian Wieseler <kickino>

Thanks for your detailed answer.

I have no other options than flash to have it platform independant, web browser compatible,etc...i'm not satified with java applets.

BUT

The flash interface will not be requested to run kafeine. It is more an addon that make it "nicer". In fact, it is the View layer that is replaced from the HTML original one.

It doesn't "link" to kafeine, it rather connect to it, just like an admin program link to postgres, or via web service API. no "includes" in the code whatsoever.

As far as i know, a "remote" software is not concerned by the licence choosen. am i wrong ?

>>I don't need to discuss here if a BSD/LGPL license could solve this issue, because the policy of Savannah doesn't allow you that the user needs to install proprietary software to run your program.

maybe this is still applicable because of what i said earlier ?
if i don't host the addon on savannah, besides ?

best regards,

emmanuel

by the way:

- I've seen a bunch of projects that has a GPL version  and a "professional" version wich is proprietary. How can it be possible ? i though the GPL was "viral".

- As kafeine is a tool for making other application(code generation), does it mean that the application needs to be GPL too ? i haven't thought that through to be honest.:(

Oh sorry... I wrote "to link a GNU program" - that was totally wrong, because I meant every program that was released under the terms of the GNU General Public License, not all GNU programs but the non-GNUs, too.

Hello...

that's a little bit difficult.
At first, Flash is a non-free format (even if there exist free implementations of Flash, it was original non-free).

At second, Macromedia's implementation of Flash and "macromedia flash" are both non-free. The program from Macromedia is even proprietary.

And you are not allowed to link a GNU program against proprietary (or non-free) libraries or programs.

I don't need to discuss here if a BSD/LGPL license could solve this issue, because the policy of Savannah doesn't allow you that the user needs to install proprietary software to run your program.

And please notice that the Macromedia Flash isn't present on a GNU/Linux system. And the "free formats" of Flash are not as complete as the implementation from Macromedia.

So all in all, don't use Flash in your program.
Hopefully I could help you a little bit. Let me know, if there still exists any questions.

Sebastian Wieseler <kickino>

Hello,

i have a question: i intend to make a macromedia flash admin interface on kafeine.

- Is that compatible with the GPL/Cecill licence used ?

- Do i have to make another projet for that part under a different licence ?

If i have to switch to a different licence (BSD ?) for kafeine
can i still be in the non gnu projects ?

If you are not the right person to ask, could you please tell me who i should ask ?

best regards

Sorry; I need holidays. ;-)

You have set your status to "non-GNU" allready, so no need to contact the GNU Eval team.

Thanks.

Hi,

This got very long this time. :-/ But hopefully everything is now all right, however I don't see further problems, so I have approved your project as non-GNU.

You will receive an automated e-mail containing detailed information about the approval.

If you would like to offer your project to the GNU project,
please contact the GNU Eval team, following the instructions at
http://www.gnu.org/help/evaluation.html .

Regards.

hello,

here it is. I hope i haven't forgotten anything this time. As it is really a dev environnement, not a realease one, there are still some "trash" files in it but i put licence for them anyway.

Best regards

The following files lack license and copyright notices:
htdocs/index*
htdocs/medias/*jpg
core/actions/*/*
core/tests/*/*/*

For the binary files (such as .jpg) please add a README file in their directories and add there the copyright and license notices for them.

Hello.

The CeCILL license is compatible with the GNU GPL, by an explicit
conversion close.

So there is no problem for us.

Can you please point me to an updated version of your source code?

Hello.

At first, can you please point me to a location where I can get this license?

At second, no problem. I'll change your status to non-GNU, nothing will change.

At third, please provide us still with an updated tarball with the changes requested in previous mails.

hello,

as i'm french, i've decided to use the Cecill licence V2 (wich is compatible with the GPL). Can i be part of the non-gnu projects ?
Does it changes something in the procedure ?

+ kafeine needs postgresql 8 as a dependance

Hello.

In order to release your project properly and unambiguously under the GPL, please place copyright notices and permission-to-copy statements at the beginning of *every file* over 10 lines of source code.

For more information, see http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-howto.html.

The GPL FAQ explains why these procedures must be followed.
To learn why a copy of the GPL must be included with every copy of the code, for example,
see http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-faq.html#WhyMustIInclude.

If some files cannot carry such licenses (e.g. binary files, such as .jpg or .png) please add in their directories a README file and write there the license/copyirght notices of them down.

At second (about ./Kafeine.class.php), you added the license notices, but did not add appropriate copyright notices.

Please check http://www.gnu.org/prep/maintain/html_node/Copyright-Notices.html
for more information, and update your files.

Hi,
I'm evaluating the project you submitted for approval in Savannah.

At first about your dependence. The license of "simpletest" looks GPL compatible but I have to investige this, and I cannot found out the license of "fValidate" (to say it's 'freeware' don't marked this as FreeSoftware and GPL compatible). Can you please ping the author of "fValidate" because of the license of this project?

At second, Please include a (perhaps temporary) URL pointing to the source code.
The description you gave when registering will not be read by the general public.
If you are still concerned with privacy, however, you can forward the code to me by email.

We wish to review your source code, even if it is not functional, to catch potential legal issues early.

For example, to release your program properly under the GPL you must include a copyright notice and
permission-to-copy statements at the beginning of every file of source code.  This is explained in
http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-howto.html.  Our review would help catch potential omissions such as these.

Sebastian Wieseler <kickino>

######### REGISTRATION DETAILS #########

Full Name:
----------
  kafeine

System Group Name:
-----------------
  kafeine

Type:
-----
  Official GNU software

License:
--------
GNU General Public License V2 or later

Description:
------------
Kafeine is a PHP5 MVC developpement framework, developped in a test driven process (using SimpleTest).

Heavy relying on  postgresql/adodb, some applications addons are planned for
 - Object persistence (via a metamodel that works just like a object oriented database via plpgsql functions, triggers and advanced rules on views. This part is done up to 90%)
 - SQL based Workflows management (40%)(very cool stuff ! works great !)
 - Fine grained user management(planning)
 - Code generation for rapid application developpement(20%)

The final goal is to have a complete solution for managing entreprise "flows" in a snap.

I'm now working hard on the low level codes and i can send you some stuff at any email adress you give me.

As i'm the only developper, i hope to realease the first stable release in the next 6 months.

I heard you are going to use gnuarch. As i work with it also, i'm very interested in that option.

best regards
