thats a very good point. I totally agree that the mission should be to transport the idea of free software instead of open source. cialis (After long discussions with George Greve I totaly understand this. :-) ).

But, hey, I asked you ONLY if you are still working on your project - a little "Hey, yeah, we are working on it - but we would like to tell you when we finished some code" would be enough!

So, I guess you work on it, and you tell me when you are ready - so we will not ask you again each week - but we will have a look at your project "in some time again"!

Have fun on our plattform and have a great time with the FreeSoftware community.

Moin Sebastian

Is this really necessary to inform you each month that we still need the project page?
If this is the fact we will think about to host the project somewhere else. I really appreciate
all you are doing and I really love the Free Software Foundation, but under this conditions
there is really to much overhead to host a project.

I am waiting for an answer from you.

If within one week I still do not get a reply, I will remove your project.
You will still be able to register it again once you have the time to deal with the registration issues.

Are you still willing to host your project at Savannah?
If not, please tell us - we don't bite, and it will make us gain time.

I've seen that your CVS tree is still empty.
Would you like we remove the project or you are still working on it?

No problem. You can change it via the "Administration" menu -> "Main" -> "Edit Public Information". :-)

But for the first time, I did it for you. ;-)

Have fun with Savannah and don't forget to notice us when you are ready with a "first version" of your project.

There is a small problem. On this page the project is called FreeRadioFinder, but if I go the the project page the project is still called
Name: OpenRadioFriendFinder

can you change this?

Thanks in advance

I have approved your project for inclusion in Savannah.

We will be reviewing the cvs code in a month (or better at your request) to check if the source files contain appropriate copyright notice and permission-to-copy statements at the beginning of every file of source code.
Our review would help catch potential legal issues early.

You should get an automated email with more information shortly.

But FreeRadioFriendFinder on the other hand is a very long word....Hmmm

But I like the short version FRFF. And I strongly want to support the philosophy of free software.

So lets rename the project to FreeRadioFriendFinder with the unix (system) name frff.

Thanks for the hint.

Sorry, almost ready, but I've forgotten a special point:

Savannah's mission is to host free software projects, and we want the public to think of them
as free software projects. A project name that says "open" will tend to lead people to think
of the project as "open source" instead of "free software".

We would be glad if you accept to use "free" instead of "open" in your project name.

What name would you prefer instead of "OpenRadioFriendFinder"?

And then I send you further information about the approvel..

Thank you very much. For sure it is okai for us to review the code later on. We are very happy that you offer the legal source code review. That is the programmers pain point. :-)

Is there a process we can start in order to ask you (or any of your colegues) to review the code?

Your projects meets the Savannah requirements, except that we cannot review your source code yet.

We can approve it, and review the code in the near future (or better, at your request).
We will among other check if the source files contain appropriate copyright notice and permission-to-copy statements
at the beginning of every file of source code. Our review would help catch potential legal issues early.

If then the source code does not meet our requirements (for example, non-free dependencies),
we will then discuss the issue and possibly remove the project from Savannah.

Is this ok for you?

Moin Sebastian

Thank you very much for your mail and the help you are offering for licence checking.

1) Code Licence
All tools or libs we are using for our project are from GNU or savannah. I think it is
not necessary to look for each lincence for this projects because they are allready
controlled by you or your colleagues.

GNU binutils http://www.gnu.org/software/binutils/
GNU gcc http://gcc.gnu.org
AVR C-Libraries http://savannah.nongnu.org/projects/avr-libc/
UISP http://savannah.nongnu.org/projects/uisp/
AVR-DUDE http://savannah.nongnu.org/projects/avrdude

Or inspiration are from
WHEREAVR http://www.knology.net/~gdion/whereavr.html
OPENTRACKER http://n1vg.net/opentracker/

The opentracker itself is extreme rudimentary. The Whereavr is more advanced but
far from our requirements. As we wrote we want to add more features to it than the
whereavr had.
So what we are using are AX.25 libraries or PSK31 (http://ax25.sourceforge.net/ and
http://www.kernel.org) and not the sourcecode from whereavr or opentracker (this project
is not based on Atmel and therefore not useable for us). The Whereavr and
opentracker are only inspirations.

The Hardware is of course free as in speech. (If someone whants he can offer a beer,
but thats not necessary. :-) ) The hardware layout is also developed by us.

3)Source Code
Sorry at the moment we do not have source code available. Only small
test programms for the ATMEL (call it Hello World). The project development is
decentral therefore we need your service to organize the project and let us develop
the source code via CVS.

Thanks for all you are doing and have a nice day.
Ansi & Angel

I'm evaluating the project you submitted for approval in Savannah.

At first, can you please point me to the project websites or to the licenses directly (prefered ;)) of your "required software"?

At second, is the produced hardware layout also free (free speech, not free bear) or is it restricted?

At third, please include a (perhaps temporary) URL pointing to the source code.
The description you gave when registering will not be read by the general public.
If you are still concerned with privacy, however, you can forward the code to me by email.

We wish to review your source code, even if it is not functional, to catch potential legal issues early.

For example, to release your program properly under the GPL you must include a copyright notice and
permission-to-copy statements at the beginning of every file of source code. This is explained in
http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-howto.html. Our review would help catch potential omissions such as these.

non-GNU software & documentation

GNU General Public License V2 or later

This project maily gaims on HAM (Amateur Radio Operators). Based on the ATMEL Microcontroller this project develop hard and software for an APRS (www.aprs.org) portabel client.

Comparable to the Opentracker (http://n1vg.net/opentracker/) projects it goes further. It goes more in the direction of an intelligent mobile assistent with interpretation of incomming APRS message, ISS (http://spaceflight.nasa.gov/station) support and calculation of the nearest FM relay.

The APRS data interpretation includes:

  • alert of friends are nearby
  • interprete weather reports from the nearest wx station
  • direction finder
  • tbd

The project is based on the WhereAVR (http://www.knology.net/~gdion/whereavr.html) and uses open source libraries from atmel and other open source project for HAM operators.

Furthermore this project can easily be reused for other radio transmitters like "citizen band" or LPD radio devices which are free (without amateur radio licence) to used by everyone.

Other Software Required:
ATMEL library
HAM libraries (APRS, Packet Radio)

Other Comments:
Additionaly to software this projects develops hardware layout.
