Hello Assaf,

Ok, I'm sorry it did not go through, but Andy is very slow wrt these things: I just got the authorization to ftp-upload, it'd been almost a year now... Progress!

I will resubmit the request when I feel apropriate.

Thanks!
[ and sorry for the extra work this request did put on you, too bad really ]
David

Hello David,

I'm closing this submission for 'guile-clutter' as a new non-gnu project.

If/when there's update regarding 'clutter' as a new independent gnu project, we can create it from scratch.

regards,
 - assaf

Ok, will do, thanks.

It did not fail any exam (and as you wrote, it wasn't really "evaluated" since it is already on Savannah written as part of an existing gnu project).

It is simply the technical limitation that I (as a savannah volunteer) can't mark a new project as an official GNU package without an OK from rms or the gnu evaluation team.

It could be a very quick process in your case - just write to them at -email is unavailable- , explaining that you want to fork an existing GNU project.

Once they approve it (in the form of a private email from rms or another person on that team), then there's no problem to mark it as a GNU package.

Hello Assaf,

It's ok.

Oh, that is a bad surprise: I feel this would be a serious
regression and I believe most developers and users would feel the
same.

To be honest, I did not even think this request would get
Guile-Clutter to have go through the Gnu evaluation process
again, since it is a branch of a Gnu project which clearly needs
it own projet page, git repo, web pages ...  The original author
already commented about that a long time ago ["... since for the
time being we only have 1 savannah project page ..."]

> Shall I continue with 'non-gnu' ?

No.  I would like Guile-Clutter to remain a Gnu Project, so may I
ask why it failed the exam and what I can do to remedy?

Cheers,
David

[*] Afaict, it complies to all requirements.  I'm getting close
to a release, a hudge improvement compare to its previous
version:

  https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/guile-gtk-general/2015-08/msg00002.html

Note the notes about cogl and clutter installations [in favour
of a separate project page I mean ...  Even the programming
style is different [both a callback and an actor model...]

Also, I found a bug in clutter itself, in 1.12.2 up to their
master branch, so now I also need to add to these explanations
for users [how to] to git cherry-pick 1 specific patch ... see

  https://git.gnome.org/browse/clutter/commit/?id=dea5057fbd7e9e2f0199ec6df6e5716635f0e5ee

[ it took me a little while to convince Emmanuele Bassi there was
[ grid layout resize bug, but he finnally agreed and patched.

Hello David,

Sorry for the delay.
Before I create the new independent project (guile-clutter) - I just wanted to verify with you:

this new project will be marked as "non gnu" (because it wasn't officially accepted as an independent GNU package).

Shall I continue with 'non-gnu' ?

Hello Assaf,

I just reralize a [big] mistake in the naming of the branches to transfer to guile-clutter, I meant this:

    clutter -> master
    clutter-devel -> devel

The devel branch is the guile-gnome devel branch and must remain part of the guile-gnome project.

I am terribly sorry for the confusion, I must have been very tired when I wrote!

Many thanks again,
David

Assaf,

I forgot to ask you, when you will create the guile-clutter, to also straight away add Andy Wingo as an admin [and member, I guess admins are members, don't know].

    Real Name: Andy Wingo
    Login Name: wingo
    Id: #20118
    Email Address: -email is unavailable-

Many Thanks,
David

Hello Assaf,

Thanks for the suggestion, but I really prefer a complete separate project.  Once it's created, we can transfer the guile-gnome git repo as this:

  clutter -> master
  devel -> devel

With the all history of each branch of course, could you do that for me?  Once it's all done I can take care of the delete branches on the guile-gnome side, I'll leave them for a while, just in case.  I will uploading webpages and manage the savannah offical pages of course...

I'd like to create a -email is unavailable- mailing list.

Wrt to bug tracker, i'd like the same system as for guile, using http://debbugs.gnu.org... we could have bug-guile-clutter@gnu.org  I need to learn how handle the admin side is there a tutorial ? how to assign, raise/lower priority and closing, is there a manual/tutorial maybe?

Many thanks,
David

Hello David,

If you want to create a completely separate project (with it's own webpage, mailing lists, etc.) - we can certainly do that.

But if you just want to create a separate git repository for guile-cutter under the guise of "guile-gnome", then there's an easier way: we can simply create a new sub-repository under guile-gnome.

Users will then be able to do:
git clone git://git.savannah.gnu.org/guile-gnome.git (for the main project)
and
git clone git://git.savannah.gnu.org/guile-gnome/cutter.git (for the guile-cutter project)

This way you keep all the infrastructure (webpage, mailing lists, etc) as before.
See similar request here:
 https://savannah.gnu.org/support/?108678

Let me know what you prefer.

regards,

Description:

Hello,

Till now, clutter bindings for guile are part of the guile-gnome project, with 2 branches:  clutter and clutter-devel.  But this really is causing confusion, not only for users, but new comers who would want to participate to the project.

Besides, it really needs separate web pages: for example, I have to explain how to git clone, checkout specific versions of both cogl and clutter, because it does not compile with the latest distro versions ...

Being a branch of Guile-Gnome is not a good idea anymore.  It used to be but now is the time to make it a separate project, it is a separate beast really.

Could you please create a separate project and grant me admin and member privileges.

Many thanks,
David
