Hello Marijan,

Thank you for the update.
Since you have not uploaded a specific archive, I have used the file "rlab-2.4.1.2.src.tgz" from source-forge. But it would help to speed things up if you do explicitly upload a tar archive.

There seem to be many source code files from many different sources and multiple license.

I have not examined all files and all licenses, but I'll point to few examples.
Please,
Verify each file in your package, ensure it has proper copyright statement and suitable license notice, and that the license is indeed Free-Software and GPL-compatible.

-1-
Some files (e.g. "./rng.g") contains what appears to be a truncated GPL license notice (looks like the last two paragraphs of the GPL header). Please amend those files.

-2-
There are many libraries included as source code inside sub-directories.
Please ensure that these source code files are indeed free, and have properly copyright and license statement (either in the files themselves, or in a clear way in a README/LICENSE files).

One example:
The C files in './rlab-2.4.1-gcc/clibs/ctftbx/src/" seem to be written by "Emmanuel Roy - Manuel DAVY" in 1999, with no copyright and no explicit license.

-3-
There are few files ('asa.c', 'asa.h') which are licensed under the "ASA" license, detailed in the file "asa_license.txt" - it is not clear if this is a free-license which is compatible with GPL (due to extra clauses with further requirements, compared to a "3-Clause BSD license").
If you have references to this license being equivalent (as free as) "3-clause BSD license", please specify them.

-4-
There are many mentions of "pgplot" - it is not clear if it is "rlab" can functional completely without the non-free 'pgplot'.

---

There could be other issues. I have not looked further.

Please,
Review the code base, and ensure it complies with the GNU Savannah hosting requirements:
http://savannah.gnu.org/register/requirements.php
http://savannah.gnu.org/maintenance/HowToGetYourProjectApprovedQuickly/

Let us know when you have amended these and other possible issues,
and upload an updated archive with the new source code.

Regards,
 - Assaf

the "upload" button is the "attached files" section at the bottom of the page. agreed that it is easy to miss.

Assaf,

I am having problems uploading the source code tar. It would be great if there were 'upload' button on the web page.

Hello Marijan,

Sorry for the delayed response.

Thank you for the clarifications.

However, pgplot's license is not compatible with Free-Software: it limits the ability of the user to distribute the program (e.g. for commercial use), and it is not clear if the user is allowed to modify the source code.
Regardless of whether you (personally) have violated its license or not, such code can not be hosted on GNU Savannah.

If you can provide a source code tarball of 'rlab' that does not include pgplot (and other nonfree source code, if any) - and 'rlab' is still fully functional with such a tarball - then it can be hosted on GNU Savannah.

Assaf,

I apologize for delayed response. I press 'respond to' in my email programme not noticing that the true address was 'INVALID.NOREPLY'

As for the sources used by, or incorporated in the rlab+rlabplus, they are listed in the attached file LICENSES.txt,
while the latest source tarball - without pgplot specifically for savannah site - is in rlab-2.4.1.1.tgz.

PGPLOT is an interesting item. The terms of the license say
"* The PGPLOT library, both binary and source, and the PGPLOT manual   *

  • `PGPLOT Graphics Subroutine Library' are copyrighted, but available *
  • without fee for education, academic research and non-commercial     *
  • purposes. Ownership of the software remains with the California     *
  • Institute of Technology.  Users may distribute the binary and       *
  • source code to third parties provided that the copyright notice and *
  • this statement appears on all copies and that no charge is made for *
  • such copies.  Any entity wishing to integrate all or part of the    *
  • source code into a product for commercial use or resale should      *
  • contact the author at the above address.                            *

so in principle, I was not violating the license terms when I was providing the source code for pgplot within rlab source tree.

The pgplot is not necessary for rlab, but I do recommend its installation on older machines (and older releases of Linux, e.g., suse9, as there pgplot is not typically available.

Hello Kostrun,

Thank you for submitting a new project to host on GNU Savannah.

Projects hosted on GNU Savannah must be Free-Software and GPL-compatible,
and 'pgplot' is clearly not so. Based on your description I'm not sure what are the current dependencies and requirements.

To continue with the project submission and evaluation, I'd ask you the following:

1. Please provide a tarball containing the full source code for the project, in its current form, as you intend to host on GNU Savannah.
Not just a URL to the code repository on SourceForge, but the actual code - this will ensure we are referring to the same code base.

2. Please provide a full list of dependencies (e.g. used libraries and other requirements),
and the license for each one (preferably with the homepage for each one, to ease verification).

3. Please ensure that 'pgplot' library is not a requirement for linking with your project,
as this would be incompatible with GPL (rendering the entire resulting binary somewhat questionable licensing-wise).

Regards,
 - Assaf

Registration Administration

While this item will be useful to track the registration process, approving or discarding the registration must be done using the specific Group Administration page, accessible only to site administrators, effectively logged as site administrators (superuser):

Registration Details

  • Name: rlab+rlabplus
  • System Name:  rlabplus
  • Type: non-GNU software and documentation
  • License: GNU General Public License v2 or later with GNU Classpath special exception (Earlier versions of rlabplus rely on pgplot. pgplot license is described on http://www.astro.caltech.edu/~tjp/pgplot/

as
"PGPLOT is not public-domain software. However, it is freely available for non-commercial use. The source code and documentation are copyrighted by California Institute of Technology, and may not be redistributed or placed on public Web servers without permission. The software is provided 'as is' with no warranty."
)

Description:

RLaB is an interactive, interpreted scientific programming environment which provides fast prototyping and program development, similar to matlab(c). Project rlabplus provides the second release of the environment for 32- and 64-bit linux systems.

Other Software Required:

rlabplus depend on bunch of libraries for doing the computational work. All of the libraries except pgplot are available from any linux distribution installation disks, and are all GNU.

Other Comments:

The project has been hosted on sourceforge for last 10 years, but I am not happy with them.
