Hi,

We did not get a response from you, so we deleted your project from the pending queue.

If you would still like to have your project hosted at Savannah, please register it again.

The re-registration URL found in our acknowledgment of your earlier registration will direct you to the proper location where you can re-register your project.

Regards.

Hi,

I am waiting for an answer from you.

If within one week I still do not get a reply, I will remove your project. You will still be able to register it again once you have the time to deal with the registration issues.

Are you still willing to host your project at Savannah? If not, please tell us - we don't bite, and it will make us gain time.

Regards.

Hi,

There are still a few issues with your code submission, though it is very good. In order to avoid legal problems later on, we require that all code uploaded to Savannah has clear copyright and license statements. This includes code that a developer has taken from other sources and included in their project. (This is why we're being so picky :) )

The MagpieRSS files must have legal headers like the XennoBB files do, except that they should attribute the appropriate copyright holder. Saying "Author: Name" and "License: GPL" is not sufficient.

Additionally, the phpThumb files have no copyright statements or permission to copy statements. Please add these, citing the correct copyright holder.

Also, in your README for the fonts, you should state their licenses, as well as the copyright holders. Currently their license is unclear.

Finally, you should ensure that the .swf file in your zip file is viewable using a Free Software player, such as Gnash. Please also include a README for it, as it is a binary file, stating its license and copyright holder.

If you were to make these changes, then I think we could approve your project.

Cheers,

Steven

Hello again.

Here is a link to the XennoBB 2.0 current snapshot. Hope I did all the required changes :)

http://www.xennobb.com/xBB_for_Savannah.zip

Also, removed menu.js (problematic Netscape license) and overlib_mini.js, which caused problems.

Sincerely yours, Marius.

PS. Pacman :)

Hi,

The source code doesn't need to be stable, or even functional. We're only checking for any potential legal issues.

If you can provide me with your current snapshot of 2.0, I'll be able to review it and hopefully approve your project.

Regards,

Steven

PS: chomp :P

Hello

Sorry, I've been away from town for the last week; of course I'm still interested in hosting XennoBB here at Savannah. But, the issues with overlib force us to make a new implementation of the hovering class, which would mean we will release a new version, 2.0 probably in a month or so. That version will be fully GNU compliant; the reason I choose not to work anymore on the 1.0.x versions is because I'm having difficulties commiting to both branches.

So, what should it be now? You can remove the project if you want, and in a month I'll submit the new project, probably with less problems as the current one (I hope for no problems whatsoever), or you can leave the current project as it is, and I'll post a link to the 2.0 sourcecode as soon as it reaches stable state.

Your choice though :)

Sincerely yours, Marius

PS. I know you don't bite :D

Hi,

You need to place a README in the folders containing binary files. These README files should contain the full copyright notice and permission to copy headers, just like your php files do, except starting with something like "All PNG files in this directory and its subdirectories are subject to the following license notice". (you probably want to adapt this though).

If the menu.js file is released under the "License of Netscape Javascript", then you should include a copy of the full license, just like for the LGPL file you have. The file header is not totally clear, which is why I thought that it was non-free. It is fine to include it.

However, overlib_min.js is not free software. Using it means that your program cannot be used on a wholly free system, and we cannot include it in Savannah for this reason. If you remove it, and do not use it in your project, then we could consider your project for inclusion. (Your project must not use or depend on it for it to be included on Savannah).

The Magpie RSS parser, and phpthumb code are not released unambiguously under the GNU GPL version X or later.

The reason for this is that when we publish GPL v3, it will be important for all GPL-covered programs to advance to GPL v3. If you don't put this in the files now, the only way to port your program to GPL v3 would be to ask each and every copyright holder, and that may be very difficult.

If you were able to contact the authors, to clarify this point, then you could include that code in your project. (Note that it would be perfectly acceptable for your project to depend on these files, rather than include them).

Also, the FSF address in the Snoopy.class.inc file is still incorrect.

Finally, changing the license of XennoBB would not solve any of the problems that we are currently facing, and would mean that you would have to change all the license notices. It would also be difficult, as the original code you are basing XennoBB on is GPL.

Regards.

Hello

You can say again that this is problematic :) I have put a COPYING file inside the fonts folder, added the GPL preamble to all JS and CSS files and the PHP ones that were missing it. Also, added the README file into the docs folder which states the copyright owner of the PNG and TPL files.

Now, the second (and tricky) part. I intended to remove the menu.js file from the distribution anyway, because I'm having some issues with it, but I see it's licensed under "License of Netscape Javascript", which is basically a free software license, as seen on the GNU website. I don't see what's the problem with the Magpie RSS parser, it's released under GPL, so it's free to use. Perhaps I'm missing something.

Also, the overlib_mini.js problem ... So, I have to remove the file else XennoBB will not qualify as a GNU-compliant project? I read the link you have, but I didn't find any solutions, except removing it (which would be kind of hard).

I don't know if I can change the licensing of XennoBB, because some of its files are based upon another GPL project, called PunBB (as stated in the preamble). But, if that's a solution, no problem on my side.

Sincerely yours, Marius

PS. Sorry for wasting your time.

(Sorry for the other post, I didn't notice I wasn't logged in, perhaps you can remove it?)

Hi,

When I went through your new tarball I noticed some additional problems. Sorry for not noticing them the first time.

All files should have correct headers stating who the copyright holder is, and what the license is. The .css and some of the .js and .php files have no legal headers. Please add the appropriate legal headers.

You also need to include license statments for your png graphics or the font files.

If some of your files cannot carry such notices (e.g. binary files), then you can add a README file in the same directory containing the copyright and license notices. Check http://www.gnu.org/prep/maintain/html_node/Copyright-Notices.html for further information.

Additionally, your project includes code released under non-free licenses and currently cannot be hosted on savannah for this reason.

The overlib_mini.js file is released under the artistic license, which is a non-free license. See http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/license-list.html#ArtisticLicense for more information.

The menu.js file is also released under a non-free license, that does not permit the releasing of modified versions.

Please provide us with more information about this.

Also, Snoopy.class.inc is licensed under the GNU LGPL. This means that you should include a copy of the LGPL, as well as correcting the FSF address in the file.

Finally, some of the files in your tarball (the rss_*.inc ones) are licensed under the GNU GPL only, and cannot be hosted on Savannah for this reason.

Licensing under the "GNU GPL" is problematic.  Would you agree to license the code under the "GNU GPL v2 or later"?

The reason for this is that when we publish GPL v3, it will be important for all GPL-covered programs to advance to GPL v3. If you don't put this in the files now, the only way to port your program to GPL v3 would be to ask each and every copyright holder, and that may be very difficult.

We can explain the issue in more detail if you wish. If you have concerns about "GNU GPL v2 or later", we'd be happy to address them too.

If you are willing to make the changes mentioned above, please provide us with an URL to an updated tarball of your project.  Upon review, we will reconsider your project for inclusion in Savannah.

Hi

All required changes done :

1. updated the FSF address.
2. created the COPYING file with the original GPL.
3. replaced all GIFs with PNGs and replaced the code that searched for GIFs.

You said that we don't have the preamble in all the files ... We do have, but only in those copyrighted by us. The others go unmodified (and some do not have the preamble), because I don't think I have the right to add the GPL preamble to them.

If I must apply the changes to them, please reply.

The address of the sourcecode is :

http://www.xennobb.com/XennoBB_for_Savannah.zip

Sincerely yours, Marius. (I just got your mail) :)

Hi,

You need to remove the GIF files, and replace them with another format, due to the patent issues currently surrounding the GIF format.

(Basically, if you converted the GIFs to PNG format, that would be fine.)

Having your COPYING in the root of the archive would probably be better.

In answer to your last question, the project remains pending until any issues are satisfied. There's no pressure for you to do it immediately.

(If I don't hear from you for a while you'll be ping-ed, and if you don't reply to that, then your project is removed from the pending queue.)

I'll check back with you in a couple of weeks, unless I hear from you sooner, OK? If you still need more time, then that's fine, we just need to know.

Cheers,

Steven

Hello again

By removing all GIFs you mean removing the code that reads and inteprets the GIF files, or just the GIF files from the package? Because the second part will be easier to do.

Also, the GPL license is currently in /docs/license.txt, but will be renamed to COPYING too, and a README file will be provided. Is it okey to keep all those files inside the /docs folder or is a requirement to be in the root folder of the archive (as I have seen most GNU programs have)?

The address replacement will be a pain ... but will be done too.

As you have seen, I am willing to make all the changes into our project, so that XennoBB will qualify as a GNU project. Only one question : the project here will remain pending for how long? I mean, I'm pressed to do the changes in 1-2-3 days or more?

Marius.

Hi,

Please remove GIF image files from your project and replace them with an other format (such as PNG or JPEG).

Because of the patents (Unisys and IBM) covering the LZW compression algorithm which are used when making GIF files, it's impossible to have free software to generate proper GIFs.  These patents also apply to the compress program.
For more information, see http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/gif.html.

Also, some of your files do not have legal headers, and there is no COPYING file.

In order to release your project properly and unambiguously under the GNU GPL, please place copyright notices and permission-to-copy statements at the beginning of every copyrightable file, usually any file more than 10 lines long.

In addition, if you haven't already, please include a copy of the plain text version of the GPL, available from http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl.txt, into a file named "COPYING".

For more information, see http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-howto.html.

If some of your files cannot carry such notices (e.g. binary files), then you can add a README file in the same directory containing the copyright and license notices. Check http://www.gnu.org/prep/maintain/html_node/Copyright-Notices.html for further information.

The GPL FAQ explains why these procedures must be followed.  To learn why a copy of the GPL must be included with every copy of the code, for example, see http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-faq.html#WhyMustIInclude.

Finally, the address of the FSF has changed, and is now:

51 Franklin Street, Fifth Floor, Boston, MA  02110-1301  USA

Please update your license notices.

Please update the copy of the license (usually, the 'COPYING' file) in your package as well.

Updated versions of the GPL, LGPL and GFDL can also be found at:
http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl.txt
http://www.gnu.org/licenses/lgpl.txt
http://www.gnu.org/licenses/fdl.txt

Hi,

I'm evaluating the project you submitted for approval in Savannah.

Please include a (perhaps temporary) URL pointing to the source code. Alternatively, you can forward the code to me by email, or attach it to this tracker. The URL you provided to your code was broken.

We wish to review your source code, even if it is not functional, to catch potential legal issues early.

For example, to release your program properly under the GNU GPL you must include a copyright notice and permission-to-copy statements at the beginning of every  copyrightable file, usually any file more than 10 lines long.  This is explained in http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-howto.html.  Our review would help catch potential omissions such as these.

Note that sending code to our repositories is a release, since the code will then be publicly available through anonymous access.

To help us better keep track of your registration, please use the tracker's web interface following the link below. Do not reply directly, the registration process is not driven by e-mail, and we will not receive such replies.

Regards.
